Default what makes my car do this

I'll be driving down the road at normal speed. The car will start sputtering like its going to die and at the same time my engine temp gauge will just stop working and go to zero.

If you didn't have the problem before, the new sensor might be bad or the connector may have dirt in it, etc.

Why did you change the sensor originally?

A bad battery could cause this to happen. You should have it load-tested.

Highly unlikely, but a bad alternator could. The car runs on the alternator. It starts using the battery.

Not true. If the battery drops below 8 amps or so the car will run like crap. Happened to me.

I knew someone that had a loose ground and had similar issues, just a stupid little ground wire going to the back of one of the Heads was loose.

If it's not the sensor itself than check the connector and wiring. Sounds like something is loose.

Yeah, it could just be a loose battery cable as well.

Don't unhook the battery or alternator with the car running, take your car to Autozone/Advance/et al and have it tested the right way for free.
