Default guage reading different than voltmeter reading

I thought my alternater was going out because it was squeeking everynow and then, plus the gauge would drop from 13v to 10v in a twenty minute drive. Hooked my multimeter up to batt before starting the car-12.7v. Started the car with nothing on, guage read 13v but multimeter 14.1. Drove for almost an hour- gauge was in the yellow with what looks like 9v hooked multimeter up and read between 13.8v and 14v everytime i stopped and checked? Am I missing something? thanks Also checked voltage from the alt wire with the same result.

Mine was way off as well. I changed that when I did the 6LE gauge face. Used a multimeter at the alternator, and adjusted the needle accordingly. Before my gauge would never show above 13v, but the multimeter showed 13.8v.
