Default 2 Cycle Oil in My Gasoline? WTF?

A buddy of mine said he just started putting some 2 cycle oil in his gas tank when he fills it up. he said it breaks down carbon and gain mpg. i have never heard of a gain from doing this. i know you can do it but i have always heard it would smoke like hell (like if you ran out of gas and all you had was weed eater gas lol). anybody heard of this? i am not gonna disagree with anything about this cuz i have no clue!! i would think that it would clog the valves with burning oil not help it.

Is he a good friend of yours????

Tell him to try water instead, its cleaner than oil.

He obviously hasen't learned that keeping oil OUT of the runners and cylinders is of the utmost importance.

Yup, this has been researched extensively and shown good results. After looking into it I started doing this in my cars. The key is that is has to be TC-W3 two cycle oil, not just any two cycle oil, and it is used at a concentration of 1 oz/5 gallons. Many people have reported better gas mileage, smoother idle, reduced knocking etc, and it also helps lubricate the fuel pump. There's a ton of information about this at the link below:

You serious? Never heard of that before. I guess 1oz/5gals can't hurt anything though.

I may give it a shot just for the heck of it. Gas is on its way back up again it looks like so if some cheap oil gains me some mpg and helps other things I'm all for that.

I was out at Moroso Motorsports Park years ago and was talking with a few guys about fuel additives. They all put transmission fluid into their tanks once a month. 1 quart into a full tank of gas to clean things out.

I guess there'a all kinds of ideas.

I personally use a full can of Sea Foam to a half tank of gas. I do this every 3 months, and I've been doing it since I bought my car in 1998. And since my 427ci was installed in 2002. I've never had rough idles or any problems due to dirty injectors or dirty valves, etc.

It probably works liek anything else.

Seafoam is great for cleaning but it won't lubricate anything. This stuff acts as an upper cylinder lubricant as well as lubricating the fuel pump. Another goal of using the TC-W3 oil is to help cancel out the corrosive effects of the increased ethanol content in gasoline, which is very hard on the entire fuel system.

My own results are not very conclusive so far, but I did get the best mileage I've seen from my Formula recently out a tank that included 3 passes at the dragstrip. And you can get this stuff at Autozone for $3 a quart, which is a lot cheaper than, say, Lucas Oil, and it's probably just as effective if not more so.

What do you mean "upper cylinder"?

As you probably have learned from my posts, I have incredible life on all my wear and tear items as well as VERY high mileage on my 427ci. I'm always interested in new **** to help things last.

It would help decrease wear at startup before oil pressure builds. If you read that thread I linked, they did a lot of research and testing, that was what sold me on it. I didn't start using this because someone heard so and so's brother say that it works good.

I just started to do this as well-but still on first tank so will probably take a few tanks to notice anything.

You add one ounze per 5 gals so add accordingly dependent upon your tank size and amount of gasoline remaining in the tank if half full. I put it in before I fill or as soon as I get home. I carry a small 3 oz bottle in the car. It is a little bottle you buy for a 2 cycle weed eater or chain saw. I emptied one and refilled with Pennzoil Marine 2 cycle - the stuff that contains TC-W3. Three oz's is enough for one tank of gas (15.5 gals 1998 Camaro Z28).

Quote from link above:

It is just as easy to follow as any other gas additive regiment. Just go and get yourself a measuring bottle and everytime you fill up or top off....round the total gallons up and when you get home put that amount of 2cycle oil in. Example....you put in 8 gallons....when you get home put in 2oz's....if you put in 6 gallons round down to 5 and when you get home put in 1oz. What we found is this.....the first few tankfuls coat/lubricate and clean......you really will not see/feel anything the first couple of tanks until the cleaning/lubrication has had a chance to do its thing....from there on out you are just maintaining the protection/solution. Very simple. You don't have to carry it around with you unless your on a long trip then just take a 12oz bottle or so with you.

Don't know about 97's. 98's are different than later years. The fuel tank grew from 15.5 gallons for 1998 to 16.8 for 1999 and later years.

Should be in your owner's manual if you still have it for your 1997.

I always like to use Marvel Mystery Oil myself. I've used it in every car i've ever owned. Just curious if any of you guys have used/tried it?

93-98 had 15.5gal tanks and 99+ has 16.8

Same benefits, just not as noticeable. This oil in the gas thing is nothing new really, people have been doing it since the 20s -keeping carbs clean was the reason marvel mystery oil was formulated.

I started putting TCW3 in my gas over 10 years ago. I had 30 some gallons of boat gas mixed at 50:1 (one quart to 12.5gal) and didn't want it sitting while I finished fixing/building the motor. So I pumped it into 5 gallon cans and added a full can into every new tank. by the time I used it up the truck was running better. Thought it was a fluke, but after a couple regular tanks it was back to its old self.

So now I do it every other tank. I use AliSyn or Klotz KL-555 in my outboard, so by default thats what gets thrown in my truck.

what a bunch of crap.

if you think 2-cycle oil will break down carbon, then why has yamaha advised the use of "ring-free" for the past 10 years? And why are there numerous clean & soak products like seafoam (all you guys should know this it's posted here once a week as how do i seafoam my car)? That solvent whether it be seafoam or re-branded under mercury marine, OMC, or yamalube, have been used for ever to soak 2-stroke outboards that would get all carboned up because of running 2-stroke oil.

not to mention adding 2-stroke oil to gasoline lowers the octane rating of the fuel,
probably along with the energy content too,
and nobody ever adds more 2-stroke oil to their gas for more power on a 2-stroke motor, they lean it out.
