Default Whining on Cold Start, AIR pump?

I have a whine when I start my car cold. I suspect the AIR pump is making that noise. If I pull the fuse or relay for the pump, the whine stops. Will it damage the cats and/or throw a code if I leave the fuse out?

Won't hurt anything, its just for emmissions. Might get an SES light.

OK. I might end up doing that if it gets worse. Thanks!

i removed my air pump. its supposdly injects fresh air into the cats to warm them up

people say it does damage to the cats if you remove it, but how come 90% cars on the road dont have an AIR system

That's a good question, I wonder about that too. I'm all for clean air but if I get longtubes I'm not going to leave it on there.

To the OP: You will probably get a SES light if you pull the fuse. You can either live with it or have it removed by computer tuning. And you could always put the fuse back in when you go for inspection.

I don't think it will hurt them. On a cool start the PCM gives a rich fuel mixture to account for the fuel not vaporizing and much sticking to sufaces and carbon. Without the rich mixture there would be many lean misfires. But the extra fuel does make its way into the exhaust eventually either as excess hydrocarbons or raw, it just doesn't do it consistantly. So what the air pump does is dump fresh oxygen into the exhaust near the exhaust valves so that the fuel will get burned in the cats before it makes it out of the exhaust. Without it the HC's just get out.
