Default WONT TURNOVER...securty light on...

just as the title says...put the key in, everything turns on but when you turn the key, NOTHING...doesnt try to turn over or anything. The security light seems to be on and is probably the problem. Any ideas or anyone had this problem?

Yeah. That little black piece in the middle of your key is a resistor, and current passes through it and allows the car to come on. If you have a spare key that hasn't been used then use that one. Or you might have to get a new key made. When it happens to me I just have to wait a while until the light turns off.

Try a different key or it may be the VATS wires in the column; they are know to break and cause this. Try a local locksmith that does VATS keys and cylinders. I had a local one come to my house with a piece of equipment that by-passes the vats system and if the car sgtarts then you know the cylinder is bad and needs replaced.

When mine did that on my 93 firebird I used a multimeter to test the resistance of the "pill" in my key. That resistance is one of about 8 (i think) unique values assigned to these keys. Go to radioshack and get resistors that when wired in series add up to the resistance you discovered on your multimeter.

Then remove the knee bolster panel under the steering column and find these wires:

Do what the photo says and splice in the resistor to that connector (I just shoved it into the connector and it shut off the light and worked fine after that.

This was on a 1993 and I really don't know if the switch to ODB2 changes this, so given your newer vehicle I would double check.

Hope this helps. It certainly is the cheap and fast route.

Check the resistance of the pellet on the key then installed key in the ignition and measure resistance between the two white 2 wires in the photo and see what you have. You will need to unplug the connector first. It should measure the same as the pellet on the key but more than likely will show open. The wires break alot at the key cylinder. If thats the cause then you can replace the key cylinder or like stated before wire a resistor in.

8 cent fix. Measure resistance of the key, wire in into vats.

Google Vats bypass

If all of the above fail, could be your BCM. I went through all the steps but problem was not cured until I replaced the BCM.
