Default car wont shift at high rpm

I have a 97 firebird formula with 120k miles on it. when i get on it, it will not shift (first or 2nd i dunno). it hits 5k rpms easy and will not shift, i have to let off.

is it the engine or transmission? both have 120k miles so both are worn and need to be replaced. if i drop it down in first, get on it, manually shift to 2nd no problem at about 5k rpm, same for 3rd.

they both work, but maybe since the trans is old and worn it wont do it on its own?

Default

the weird part is, when i test drove the car, my dad said the trans felt good. it shifted firm, and way harder than any other car i had drove or ridden in. it still does it, just not at the high rpms.

thx fleet
