Default SES code - Is it the cats?

Since I have had the car out of storage for this summer, I have been receiving SES code P0430 which is the catalyst system efficiency below threshold (bank 2). I normally clear it myself, cause im sick of looking at it.. The car has not been under powered or non responsive when I hit the gas, as others have complained of when this code is present. However, I do need to pass an emissions test next year and I have been doing some research and most people say its probably my passenger side Cat that is throwing the code. The car only has 18600 miles on it and the cats are SLP, who we're installed by the previous owner. I hate to replace the cats, since I'm assuming they are new, but I don't want to fail the test either. In the mean time, am I causing any trouble to the vehicle, when I clear the codes and continue to drive until they come around again? They come around approximately every 30 start ups or so. So its not to often, as others have complained of clearing the code, then the next drive it comes back. Also, if you guys think its the cat, does anyone know where I can buy 1 cat? Everywhere I look, they are sold in pairs, and since they are so expensive, I would love to just buy 1. Thanks for your help and suggestions ahead of time.

Car doesn't have to be perfect to pass Ontario emissions.

Clear the code and give it a try, it might pass as is.

Are the SLP cats direct fit, or are they the small ones that are welded in?

It might be cheaper to buy 2 used cats than one new one. A new aftermarket direct fit cat is $250 if I remember correctly.

Good luck!

The SLP cats are direct fit, with the clamps holding it in place. To me it doesn't look like their are any welds.. Just 2 clamps on either side holding it in place. But I guess my main concern is that.. am I harming the car by continuing to drive it and just clearing the codes everytime they come in?

Thanks

Your not doing the car any harm if the code is P0430. It's only checking the cats.

Problem is those aftermarket cats may not pass emissions. Give it a try.

Most aftermarket high flow cats will throw this code. Almost every car I've seen with longtube headers and aftermarket cats has thrown this code.

What you can do to pass emissions is buy a set of "spark plug anti-foulers"... They're made for spark plugs obviously, but if you buy the one with the bigger threads, you're O2s will thread right in. All you have to do is...
1. Buy a set of two. (any auto parts store)
2. drill one of them out... so you can fit the O2 sensor inside of it.
3. screw the two into each other.
4. unscrew O2 from your O2 bung, and thread the anti-foulers in.
5. Then screw your O2 back into the anti-foulers.

Clear the code.. and you're good to go. We just did this on my buddies Audi A4.. The new cats would have costed him about 2 grand... The spark anti-foulers? About $20.

They will run a gas analyzer.. But as long as you didn't screw with anything you should be fine.

I do know how it works... PO430... Is a test that your car runs to see if your cat is sufficient... What your car does is dump a little extra fuel... And sees if the cat drowns out the extra gases... Your front o2s will cross count...(rich lean rich lean rich lean) and your rear o2s should flatline.... Since they are after the cat. Basically your cat isn't working perfectly under the tests conditions. All we are doing is forcing those rear o2s to flatline... Which gets rid of your code.
Now when you go to get emissions tested... You shouldn't have anything to worry about... Since your car isn't dumping extra fuel in there... You shouldn't have any extra emissions.
