Default Bad Cats or O2 sensor?

Okay, so my friend's Subaru overheated this past weekend, but after letting her car cool off, she could drive it again. On her way home, she got the SES light. The code it spit out was P0420 (Catalyst Efficiency Low). When cruising the car, the rear O2 sensor was freaking out, so is this a Cat problem or a bad O2 sensor?

Probably the CAT, I'd clear the code and see if it comes back.

The code has been cleared, how long will it be until it comes back?
