Default Cleaning your alternator?

So I currently have my alternator off from a timing set/oil pump replacement and it is covered in oil from a leak I am trying to find/fix. Anyhow I am wondering if there is a specific way to clean an alternator or will like brake parts cleaner and a rag work? I am not sure if the oil is motor oil or power steering fluid but it is filthy and I wanted to clean it up before reinstalling it. Oh yeah also do you know if I have to purchase a new crank bolt or can I reuse my stock one? Thanks!

Don't clean the inside of the alternator. I killed my last alternator with that special electric spray.

Yes, you need to buy a new crank bolt. The old one is stretched and no good.

And the oil is most likely power steering fluid. That's the most common problem with ls1's and dead alternators. Check your power steering hoses for leaks.

You killed it with electrical contact cleaner? That shouldn't take the coating off of the wire.

Brake and carb cleaner definitely will, though. Don't even think about using them!

Yes I did. My power steering was leaking from the cap and it had got all over the alternator. Sprayed the alternator with some elect. contact cleaner and it killed my alternator. It was no biggie since it was an Autozone alternator and it had Lifetime warranty.
