Why does my temp keep changing to XXX?

Why does my temp keep changing to XXX? Coolant temp keeps turning to XXX...If the codes are reset with the buttons on the dash the gauge works again for about 20 seconds than back again to XXX on the digital gauge and pegged on the needle gauge. Brand new sensor, what could this be? 98 corvette
