Problems starting in the cold I have a 1999 Trans Am. On cold days it frequently hesitates when starting. I turn the key and hold it over and eventually if left in that position after a few seconds it starts like normal. It has no problem starting after the sequence begins. It's very strange. During warm weather it starts as soon as the key is turned. It is not a problem with the battery as this has already been replaced. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

I'm not sure exactly how cold is it outside, I live in Northern New Mexico. I'm guessing around 65 degrees or so at night this time of year. The oil is 10W30 but I wouldn't think that would have anything to do with it. Seems to be an electrical issue of some kind. It sometimes takes a little time to start if it's been sitting a couple days too, but not as long as when it's cold.

Check your owners manual on the oil. You live in a place where you should be running 5W30 in the winter. (If you have a stock setup.) I forget the exact temperature GM recommends not using 10W30, but recall it being in the 50s or 60s. If your oil is too heavy, you will notice that it takes a couple of extra turns of the engine to get going.
Of course, if your talking about something more than a few extra turns of the engine, maybe you have a loose electrical connection that is expanding/contracting with the temperature?

this is way out in left field, but did you check your fuel pump relay? The fuel pump is controlled by the relay, but also the oil pressure switch. If the relay goes bad, but it still has oil pressure, it will continue to operate without issue. But, when you try and start it, it has to build a certian amount of oil pressure before it will let the fuel pump kick on. Maybe when its cold, it takes it a second to pump the oil and delays it for a few ticks?
