Default Trip odometer keeps resetting

Ok, about a week ago I switched out my driver side O2 because it wasn't working even though I had a NEW bosch 13111 in there. So I cleaned the connectors out with some spray and installed another O2 that I had laying around and now when I start my car I noticed that the odometer is always set to 0. What is causing this? My idle seems fine, but my car seems to have bad MPG now. Now I always reset my odometer to 0 when I get gas just to see how long my tank lasts, but now it just keeps resetting on its own.

I'm just guessing, but the "trip" button has a spring on it. Is the spring broken or weak, and now the counter can reset when you put the brakes on?

The O2 problem has to be unrelated.

Is battery dying? That can cause a reset.

my car has been doing the same thing for about two weeks now. I havn't changed anything in proly 6 months so I don't know where to start looking.

The spring on my trip meter seems fine. My gas mileage seems to be unaffected.

Check the connections on your battery.. Mine did the same thing and all it took was a 99 cent screw for my optima battery cable and it was fixed

My battery doesn't die its actually only 3 years old. Also, the spring for the trip odometer is not broken. Also, I have a after market deck and I still have my stations that I programmed.

There is a TSB on the '99 cars resetting the trip odo (sometimes accompanied by the gauges sweeping also on startup). Check the battery connections and/or have it load tested - a good battery makes it go away. Just because the battery is 3 years old doesn't mean anything.

That's when I know my odometer is reset because the guage needles sweep.

i had the same thing too, it means the amps in your battery are getting weak, even tho the car starts up your battery is on its last leg.

+1 on the battery connection. mine was loose and it reset itself every time since i bought the car. check the connections and make sure the bolts aren't stripped out or something is loose. I changed the connection on my positive terminal and everything was fine. I would check this before anything else. If it isn't this then I would suggest a battery load test or maybe a parasitic drain test to make sure your battery isn't dropping to a lower voltage when you start your car.

Love this forum.

Have had the same problem for ages. The "gauge sweep" lol. I thought it was kind of cool. But yeah, makes sense about the battery. And it happens to me more often on cold mornings. I have had the same battery in my car for over 8 years!

Sorry, I know old thread.

There was a TSB for the 1999s. It happens with a battery with only a low voltage left or on very cold days also (something with the pins behind at the gauge cluster). Cars are way out of warranty so I doubt any dealer will still fix it if it is the cluster lol. My 99 does it but now the battery is on the weak side. Still enough to start the car easily everytime. Hope it helps.

I love this forum, I just bought a 1999 Trans Am, and it was doing this. I thought it might be the battery, as it has been slow to start but this thread confirmed it for me. Thanks!
