Default Someone pleeeeease help me figure out this problem!

This problem is driving me absolutely insane. For the last couple months I have been fighting this issue with my tachometer. While driving, it will randomly fall to 0 RPM for maybe 5-10 seconds at a time and pop back up to normal. It appears that the majority of this time is under acceleration but then again it sometimes happens at idle as well. It is throwing a code for the Camshaft position sensor. I have replaced it 3 times. The first couple times it seemed to help the problem with the last time doing no help at all. I did some more reading and decided to replace the crankshaft sensor. No cigar. Next, I replaced the instrument cluster. Still no help!

From what I can tell, the car drives, starts, and performs as normal. Been driving it like this for quite sometime with no added problems.

I'm going to burn this car to the ground if I can't figure out this friggin problem. For the love of god, someone please help me figure this out!!!

I think the plastic gear in your headlight motor is stripped.

j/k

sounds like a wiring problem maybe in the plug that the cluster snaps into.

^ Yes, if you replaced both sensors and the cluster, you have a wiring issue somewhere.

Maybe all those issues are not related. How old is your serpentine belt?

Carefully check te connections at the PCM. The pins can corrode over time under certain conditions.

+1 on checking your PCM. FWIW replacing the cluster isnt going to help you, that light is only triggered by the PCM. Look for corrosion, but all in all its probably gonna be where the problem lies.

This is a joke right? I replaced the serp belt with a gatorbak 50 miles ago.

The pig tail at the cam sensor? I purchased an OEM pig tail when I replaced the cam sensor for the third time but decided to not replace it because stock looked absolutely fine.

Does anyone know what pin to check at the PCM? I looked at the PCM earlier thinking that was the problem and it seemed fine. I just unbolted it and bolted it back in. However, I wouldn't even know which one to look at.

Would a Tech II be able to tell me if I have a bad connection somewhere?

Like someone already stated, have someone watch the tach, and wiggle stuff around, this does sounds like a loose or shorted wire, if its mainly happening when you accelerate, things are getting tossed a little from the inertia, could be a chaffed wire making contact with something when the motor is rocking.

Yeah well how in the hell do I test this? It does not do this at idle. Unless it's possible for someone to sit in the engine bay while I go WOT, wiggling connections does me no good!

I hate electrical gremlins

Sounds like what you need is an old fashiond wire diagram and trace it. It will tell you what color wire and what pin it goes in.

Have your alternator checked, and battery too.

No joke. The problems might be unrelated. Are all of your other gauges normal when the tack craps out? What does your voltage gauge do?

Alternator and battery are both brand new. Car sits at a constant 14 volts

I went through this a while back with my 2001. My PCM ended up being bad. I did all the diagnostics in the GM flowcharts and even swapped out the cam sensor and engine harness with other ones I had and knew were in good working order. Go here to find the flow charts

^Yes. Do this. You do not have to go WOT when someone's head is under the hood because you are simulating the shifting engine when you are wiggling the wires around.

The car ONLY does it while driving. Not when at idle. Having someone wiggling wires while sitting in my garage will do be no good since it acts as normal

Is your car auto?

If yes, put it in D, hold the brakes, and load up the engine mounts. See what the tach does.

From all you have described, the problem is a wire running from the cam sensor to the PCM. But I don't like jumping to conclsions without checking it out.
