Exclamation steering column

okay so heres the problem im trying to change my egnition .. the whole thing .. problem is i dont know how to take the steering column off.. i took the wheel off and another round piece that comes right after the wheel removal but im stuck on this one circle metal plate that has groves on the outer side of it.. i have no idea how to take this off.. some1 plz help

Yes, sir.

The plate with notches cut into it is called the locking plate and you need a locking plate puller kit from any auto store. They come with two u brackets and some bolts.

After you install the puller kit you depress the plate and then use a pick to get the small metal ring out of the groove in the upper steering shaft.

It is a long complicated process to tear down a GM tilt column if you haven't done it before.

Also if you know where to look you can get help since virtually all GM tilt columns from like 1972 to about the mid 00's are about the same.
