Default Power steering still on the fritz after pump replacement...

A while back I had a leak (unknowingly) in my power steering fluid which eventually lead to my power steering pump going out. I went to Autozone, got a new pump and pulley tool, did the replacement with no hiccups (or at least I thought). Added fluid and took her for a spin, seemed perfect, all steering was normal at all angles and throttle positions. After about 25mi of driving, I was in town, and my power steering gave out. A few blocks later it comes back, a few blocks later, back in, etc.

The only pattern I can see is that when I'm giving it throttle (no matter in gear or in neutral), I get power steering, as to when I'm totally off the pedal the steering goes out again.

Could I have installed the pump wrong somehow? Or was it possible that I damaged something else when the power steering fluid was low/out?

Did you purge the system of air?

Sounds like air in the system.

Newbie here so forgive me...

As in, I should turn the wheel back and forth with the power steering fluid cap off to rid the possible air in the system?

proper procedure:

-install pump
-add fluid
-turn pump counter clockwise by hand for quite some time
-run car for 3 seconds
-shut off, add fluid
-run car for 10 seconds
-shut off, add fluid
-run car at 1500 rpm and turn lock to lock 10 or 15 times with wheels off ground
-shut off, add fluid
-put the car on the ground, turn lock to lock 10 or 15 more times
-check level, add if needed

I installed my new ported/reduced flow pump today, works like a charm

Any recommendation now that I've already driven 40+ miles on it? Or am I already screwed?
