Stock oil filter was changed
First time changing the oil on my 98 TA I picked up a K and N filter for LS1 and it did not screw on, the hole on the filter was too small.
It needed a Fram ph10060. The oil cooler does not have a line running back to radiator (I think thats where it was supposed to go) so something was changed either the "fitting" or the whole oil cooler.
I want to run a K and N or Mobile 1 filter for my car.
Now my question is this. Can i just unscrew the "fitting" (I don't know what its called) that holds the filter to the cooler, or do i need a whole new cooler?
If anyone knew thread sizes that would be awesome. Thanks!

it sounds like you got a filter for the newer LS2/3 motors, their oil filter thread is different than for the older LS1 motor, you do not want a PF-48 or hp-1017, that is for the newer LS motors, yours is an LS1.
the cross ref's i have for the LS1 are this,
with the original oem being AC-delco PF44, the part number is now PF46.
the long length filter is PF-61,
mobil M1-107 (short)
mobil M1-206 (long)
napa 1045 (long)
fram ph3506 (short)
fram ph3675 (long)
K&N hp1007 (short)
K&N hp 2006 (long)
the old LS1 filters have a 13/16-16 thread,
the hp-1017 and any filter for the newer LS3 has a 22x1.5mm metric oil filter thread according to K&N, which is why it didn't screw on.
and for the PF46 / PF61 oil filter for the LS1,
the o-ring gasket is 2.625"
the short length filters (PF46) are 4.25" and the long length filters (PF61) are 6.25".

The filter that wouldnt fit was K&N hp1007.
I think the HP-1017 is the right one, I just picked one up.
EDIT: K and N HP-1017 fit.

that car most likely had the oil pan replaced for some reason then(chucked a rod recently?). the new oil pans have a newer metric fitting and use the same filter as newer lsx's. you just have to remember from now on when you go to get filters, cause if you ask for a filter for a 98 ls1, you'll be doing this dance all over again. i dont belive you can swap the fitting to the old style.

I'm not sure what happened to it... I just picked it up couple months ago bone stock with 84k on it and not much info from prev owner.
Would be nice to know why it was changed.
I know what filter it takes now, so thats all that really matters I guess.

I wonder if it was just the 'adapter' that holds the filter to the block that was changed?
