Default 408 Starter Connection Problem/Question

I have been trying to start my car for a couple of days. Heres whats happening: got the battery hooke dup and it was dead so i went and bought the biggest interstate battery sold. called the mega-tron plus 800 CCA 1000 CA.. anyways go to start the car the started silinoid clicks but the starter will not turn. Today when i went, i hooked up the new interstate and turned the key, silenoid clicked, but nothing happened. I just held the key in the on position as if i were starting the car, soon enough maybe 10 seconds later, i see smoke coming from the battery, i turn the ignition off and jump out and the wire to the starter is smoking and burning and bubbling, but no fire just smoke.

so theres the story now to how i hooked up the starter, which is where i think the problem lies. the two wires that come from the battery i hooked the one that is red to the hot on the starter and i took the ground and put it on the ground on the starter. i have now read it should be ground to the block.

so what is wrong, what do i need to switch around. wires i mean? please help thanks

Your starter is bad. The reason you saw smoke was because of a prolonged large current draw. Now you get to replace the cables, too.

just because its new doesnt mean it works. is it a rebuilt unit? did you use shims? pull it out and test it.
