I'd guess your knock sensor is toast.

First thing I would do is clean your MAF sensor with some electrical contact cleaner and a Q-tip (very carefully of course), cured that exact problem on my old 02 TA

just for future reference, can someone explain why cleaning the MAF wires would fix detonation?

The MAF wires get dirty over time (covered with all the tiny dust particles that get past the filter) so it can't take an accurate reading of the air entering the intake and therefore the computer calculates the wrong air-fuel ratio, making the engine ping. This is much worse if you run a "re-useable" filter that uses oil (like K&N) because if you over oil the filter the extra oil particles get sucked through the filter and stick to the MAF wires again throwing off the air-fuel ratio.

Low fuel pressure, dirty fuel filter, clogged injectors are a few things that will cause pinging. My 99 started to ping at WOT and I found the fuel system was toast, fuel pump rusted and fuel lines rusted. Injectors screens were clogged with rust. I'd check it over carefully.
