Default TCS issue

I have a 1998 Trans Am with the traction control switch by the shifter (automatic). I just bought the car, and the TCS OFF light won't turn off. When I start the car, the light doesn't appear on the instrument panel, the switch has the glowing indicator on it, and everything seems normal. I can even put it in drive and let the car move without giving it any throttle, and the TCS OFF light doesn't come on. But the instant I give it any amount of throttle, in drive or reverse, the light pops up and can't be turned off with the switch. I checked the fuse, changed it even though it looked good. I've gotten under the car and checked out the rear plugs in the inside of wheel (which i assume are the speed sensors?) and they seemed fine. Any ideas what this could be? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
