Default Here is a odd problem to help me solve

ok so after a 16 hour drive from NC on about the last 20 minutes of driving my car starting acting very strange. It started spitting and sputtering and the check engine light started blinking.

at idle it would run really rouph but the rpms would stay at 900. it started runnign really rouph and slipping and backfiring as well.

it seemed to run ok once I got the rpms up.

I was on about a quarter tank of gas from the last fillup before it started doing this.

and everyytime i would get it around 2k rpm the check engine light would blink.

ALSO there was a HORRIBLE gas odor comming from the exhaust almost to the point of chocking you out.

my gas milage also dropped significantly I burned up about 3 gallons in 10 miles.

then I parked the car overnight and figured I would take it to get looked at the next day, well I hop in the car the next day and all is good no problems what so ever car runs fine.

Any ideas on what this could be?

16 hours STRAIGHT?!! .. ... I wouldn't trust anything but a rental car with that kind of abuse.

Despite the issues addressed, when you had some speed, did it feel weaker or was it just as strong as normal?

Quite the contrary. Steady highway cruising at optimal engine temp is the condition that wears the car the least. That includes engine, trans, tires and brakes.

Driving an ice cold engine down to your mailbox in the morning is abusive.

No advice for OP, but I would check for trouble codes to see if anything is in there.

Well the blinking check engine light means misfire. Which would also explain the gas smell from the exhaust since it would just be blowing unburnt gas out of the dead cylinder(s).

What's the maint. history? How long since plugs/wires were done?

Someone else chime in but is it possible that from running for so long a coil got too hot and started to crap out? After it cooled back down perhaps it started working right again. I would think that if a plug or wire was bad the symptoms would have repeated the next time the car was driven.
