Default My V8 sounds like a whiney b!tch!

I started hearing it a couple days ago when it got to 30* in dallas. I started my car...WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA...its very annoying at idle and if i rev, the sound does become a higher pitch but I cant hear it much when im driving my car isnt exactly quiet. Its coming from the front of the engine in the powersteering area? sounds louder from the bottom of the engine but that could be cuz the ground is right there...and I have alot of black residue (grease) on the center section of my steering rack but couldnt find a leak. I opened the lid on the powersteering fluid but I didnt see a marker or anything of where its supposed to be filled to. What could be the problem here!?

Can't offer much advice, but last night in Ohio it was about 1-2* and -15 with the windchil, sounded like my car had a freaking supercharger on it!

Sounds like your power steering pump is on it's way out. They make a sound kinda like what you're describing when they are about to take a dump.

The marker is on the power steering cap. There's a dipstick style thing that comes down. Fill it with power steering fluid to see if that takes care of it.

as long as it doesn't whine once its warmed up i wouldn't worry about it.

Power steering pumps (even in perfect working condition) will whine when they are cold you just aren't used to it because of your location

My dad showed me about the dipstick on the cap I didn't even see it. It makes that sound even once the car warms up. But I drove it today and it was around 65 70 in houston and it didn't make that sound so I'm stumped...how hard/expensive is it to change a power steering pump

Was it the PS pump? Or maybe even the water pump...? What was the outcome?

I wouldn't say it's your power steering pump. I would however check your tensioner pulleys. Mine did the exact same thing until i removed my AC belt. The tensioner pulley on that one was fubar'd.

sounds like a powersteerig pump from being cold , happens all the time up here makes a whinning sound till it warms up a alittle then goes away , up here the cars don't make it since they get used to the cold , but the last 2 days with the 30 degrees below normal temps mine on both of my vehicles are whining , and they are going to whine tommorrow as its -14 right now outside .

Started it back up again and it revved itself up to about 3k for a few seconds then came back down...but no whining my PS pump is gone anyways

The sound went away for about a week, cold, hot didnt make a noise. And just recently it started whining ALL the time even when it warms up...I noticed theres some orange fluid leaking (guessing power steering fluid cuz it is a little low) Im going to add some and see if that does anything
