car smells rich...gas mileage gone to hell
So last friday my check engine light came on and the car all of a sudden started smelling really rich and it seemed like the gas mileage took a big hit that day but the car seemed to run fine.
I then tried plugging two different scanners into the car and both powered on but neither one would connect, but that is a different issue.
I unplugged the battery for a while and fixed some minor exhaust leaks by the collectors and plugged the battery back in. The check engine light has not came back on in almost 200 miles of driving and turning the car off and on a good 30 times. But the car still smells really rich.
Any help would be appreciated.
The car has long tubes and no cats with one set of O2s. And it is tuned using speed density.
Thanks

Sounds like a failing 02 sensor(s). They will make the engine run rich as they are failing. And don't necassarily expect to get a code till that sensor is totally failed. Our PCM's, allot of them, will not detect that an 02 sensor is failing and the engine will run shittier and shittier.
A scan while the engine is running to see how the sensors are switching is the only way to detect a failing 02 sensor.

Ok thanks. I keep leaning towards failing O2 sensors. Im going to hopefully get it looked at tomorrow.
If that is the issue should I just get stock replacement ones or I have seen people on here talk about bosch 13111 from a corvette.
Thanks!!

Bosch are crap and will not work on allot of our cars. PCM's are NOT all alike. My car will not run, literally will not run with Bosch sensors.
Get Denso sensors Part # 2344087
Rockauto.com and Amazon are always right around $40.00 each.
Densos are the sensors that GM puts into their AC Delco boxes and sells them at all dealerships as their own sensors. They are the best sensors ever made.
But get that scan first......the person thats doing the scanning should know what to look for. They need to make sure that the sensors are SWITCHING properly.

Watch the bank 1 sensor 1 and bank 2 sensor 1 millivolts (mV) and see if they are switching from roughly 150mV to 900mV in a timely fashion. They can get sluggish as they deteriorate. On a side note, my car definitely had a stronger smell when I put LT's and a ORY on.

Ok I will look for that. I've had the car for about a month now and I don't remember it smelling when I first got it. I noticed the smell right when the check engine light came on. There is probably nothing wrong but I figured I would be getting better than 13 mpg. I just changed the plugs a few weeks ago. I need to pull one out and see what its doing.

I wasn't able to get it scanned yesterday or today but I should be able to monday. If nothing comes up I might have the tune looked at. My 1980 Camaro with a 383 and a th350 got 10 mpg. I figured this car should be closer to 20 mpg than 10. And its not like I have my foot in it all the time, I rarely get on it.

So I was finally able to get my car on a tech 2 scanner last week and the o2s were switching just fine. But, yesterday my Ses light came on again. So I checked the codes and a new code popped up, P0135 which is bank 1 sensor 1 o2 sensor. I guess im going to get a new o2 sensor and go from there.
