Default help!

Well I was driving my car and I noticed a few of my dash lights come on and my stereo was being strange, then my speedometer started to go wayy off, then after that my car started revving itself and it kept jumping forward and finally it shut down. We kept trying to jump it and get it going but it ended up dying shortly after. I called and talk to a mechanic and he said it might be the alternator......I'm trying to do research and read up on this, any ideas what it could be?

from what you described i would believe it was your alternator too. did you watch your battery voltage gague? it should be reading above 13 if its below the yellow hash marks it is very safe to say your alternator is not putting out enough juice to charge the battery and run all your accessories.

Good Luck

Same thing happened to me and it was b/c my alternator belt broke. So either 1. alternator is bad, 2. Belt broke, 3. Battery is really dead

They can be. A new one will run about $150-$200 if you do it yourself. Idk how much it'll cost to get it done though.

yeah. just and idea. try to save up a "rainy day" fund. it'll help say if your engine blows up or if your little brother destroys your transmission...not that i would know or anything.

sounds like the alternator died. Did it start feeling like the car has no power?

Might want to look at a used altenator from a truck with a 5.3 from a auto recycler. Cheaper than an LS1 replacement.

newls1-haha, well i don't spend money unless i need to, and i always have a rainy day fund, i knew before buying this car it was nothing but a money vacume.

xrelapse-yes it would revv and then loose power kinda like it was struggling.

sherman-i think id rather buy a brand new one so i won't have to worry about it and it would make me feel more secure.

If you buy a new one, get the lifetime warranty. I have replaced mine twice under warranty.

If you can get the car to a shop or a advance auto parts they can test it for you.if not you can bring it in off the car last resort.sounds like your alt. If the battery is fairly new.far as replacement the cheapest would be junkyard or off a member here.

Go to Napa or Advance auto.

Stay away from Autozone's alternators.

Easy altinator test.... Start car.....while its running disconnect the possitive battery cable. If the car dies the altinator is most likely trashed.
