Default Ticking During Acceleration at Low RPM's - M6

Does anyone know why I would have a ticking noise during low RPM acceleration and if so, how I can fix this? It sounds almost like an exhaust leak, but, I've double checked and triple checked all my exhaust clamps and header bolts. It's very noticable in the 1000-2200 RPM range in a low gear under moderate or heavy acceleration in a 6 speed. The car feels to run like a champ anything over 2500 RPMs and the tick is no longer noticable. I'm not sure if it matters, but shortly before the tick began I had the following work done on the car:

'98 LS1 6 Speed -112K miles

1. Pacesetter LT's
2. Texas Speed Catted Y Pipe
3. NGK TR6 Plugs
4. GMPP Spark Plug Wires
5. New 02 Sensors
6. Tune
7. Oil Change with Mobil 1 Synethic and Mobil 1 oil - in the past I've always used conventional oil

Existing Mods:
1. SLP Lid and Catback
2. 255 LPH Fuel Pump
3. Monster Clutch

I didn't notice the tick right when I had the work done, but it has been consistent the last coupe of weeks and is driving me crazy. Please help me figure out the problem! I haven't been able to find much other guidance on this type of issue on the forums. Your help is very much appreciated.

I have the same ticking. Hell, I think we all do. It's just your valvetrain. That's what I've always been told. All 5 of my F-Body's ticked.

Can anyone else vouch for this? It just doesn't seem right. I don't think anythink is really mechancially wrong, I just think the sound is annoying. Anyone with thoughts/suggestions?

If you do search around here, you'll see it's just the way LS1's are. You don't have to like it, as I don't, but it's just the way it is.

I switched to Castrol Edge and my cold start up ticking has ALMOST disappeared, and my warm ticking is all but gone.

Yeah, I was thinking about trying different oil. What viscosity are you running?

I use Edge 5w30 in both my SS and my escalade (LQ9.) Made a BIG difference in both. Just changed it in the SS after 4k, and it still had a gold color to it. Surprised the **** outta me, b/c I was worried about that extra thousand miles.

In all honesty, my oil has been getting cleaner and cleaner when I change it.

You do have a 98 though, which is NOTORIOUS for piston slap.

I know my 99 has it as well. I could hear it like crazy under the car and was scared shitless due to my high mileage (236,XXX). Had another LS1 gent listen to my motor and was told he wishes his sounded as good as mine. Lets say I was surprised to hear about piston slap, but also relieved at the same time.

I also have a 98 Z28 that just went over 100000 miles. I just put the slp long tube headers on mine with the high flow cats and y pipe and I have the loud mouth cat back to. I also have a granitellies aftermarket lid. After I put the headers on I noticed the sound in mine to. It is doing the exact same thing yours is doing. I am searching trying to find out how to get rid of it as well. I use 10w-30 mobil 1 oil.

Two thoughts, based on things that are happening on my '99 Z M6 with 251K miles.

Upon start up, I have a lifter tapping for a little while until it warms up. Then the tapping goes away.

Second, lately I have a fuel injector that ticks all the time. It's more noticable at low speeds. Could that be what you're hearing?

I'd say its an exhaust leak - even though you claim its not. Just because all the clamps are tight doesnt mean they are sealing. The reason you dont hear it over 2500 is because the exhaust note gets so loud out of the tailpipe it blends everything in. Have someone plug your tailpipes for a minute and listen near all the joints to guarantee its not exhaust before thinking its something in the engine.
