strange sound ,,, please help

strange sound ,,, please help on my way home i hear a pop(going about 20 mph).. and the engine hesitated and then it sounded like i was dragging something... so i stoped got out and looked under the car... nothing.... babied it home and drove ok,,,,, i parked it for 2 days and was planning on changing the spark plugs so i did and then started it up for a test drive and idled ok. then i was just was pulling out of the driveway and didnt hear it in reverse but as soon as i put in drive and gave it a little gas i heard a grinding noise... let off the gas and it quit... anybody have any ideas on what else i can check before ripping the rearend apart??? thanks
its a dragging/grinding noise only under a load it seems.... when it 1st happend i was thinking cats... but now i dont know if it is gear/axle bearings or ebrake dragging.... THANKS
Car has 180k miles on it.... and a previous owner change out the gears and put in 3.23 gears(so im told)... motor has 60k on it and tranny has less tha 1200 miles on it...

found my problem,,, the loud noise was the keeper from the posi pen coming out and getting lodged in my pinion bearing... looks nasty! bye bye 2.73 hello torsion posi with 3.42.... hope to be laying rubber down again soon!
