Default lt1 temp gauge not working

my buddy just bought a 95 lt1 camaro and the water pump wasn't working so we replaced it. the temp gauge never really worked right, it would stay at 180* or not work at all so we replaced both the sensors in the water pump and the one in the head that controls the gauge. the fans come on like there supposed to but now the gauge doesn't work at all. if you put a multimeter on the wire to ground it reads 12v like its supposed to, if you ground the wire out it only goes back to 180* instead of maxing out like its supposed to. anybody have any thought on the problem here, the only thing i can thing it can be is the gauge.

short version: wire to temp gauge sensor (red on wire, black on ground)
reads 12v
wire to temp gauge sensor to ground only makes gauge read 180* instead of maxing out.

I have no idea.

What sensor controls the fans?

Seems that if the PCM knows how hot the coolant is that its the gauge its self and not the sensor.

there is two sensors, the one in the water pump goes to the pcm an tells the fans to come on. the one in the head goes to the gague.

It sounds like you've already (electrically) determined the root cause of the problem. I would agree - it sounds like the gauge is indeed the issue.

yea, he is going to go get a cheap water temp gauge from autozone tomorrow and im gona splice the wire from the head to the gauge and put some power to it and see if it works. if it works were either gona mount the the gauge in the cabin somewhere out of the way or just go to the junk yard and get a new cluster. is there any way to fix the cluster thats in there?
