Default Fuel Gauge Fluctuation?

Lately, my fuel gauge is going all over the place. I put some gas in it, and it shoots up to almost full. When I start the car, it will go up over half, then come back down and read correctly. Any idea what causes that?

I had this same problem before I replaced mine. It turned out that my original fuel level sensor was completely stripped and couldn't read correctly anymore at all. I ran out of gas a couple of times on the street because I had to resort to guessing after a while

Well, there in lies your problem. You have to drop the fuel tank in order to get to it I was in the middle of doing an LS1 swap so this wasn't a big deal since I had the car on stands for a few months. If your gas tank is full, then it sucks bad, but if you can make sure it's pretty low then lowering the tank isn't too difficult. It's going to take several hours though, and at least 2 sets of hands. I think a new sensor is over $100. You can just call a GM dealer and ask so you can have an idea.

You don't have to drop the tank. Most people do it the easy way and cut an access panel and you can get to it that way

I did that on my '96, but I really don't want to cut this one. Is it pretty straightforward to drop the tank?

What did this turn out to be? I have the hatch already cut in the back so its easy to get to but I want to know what to get at first. Is the sensor on the top cap where the wires connect or inside the tank on the bar/float? My fuel gauge is fluctuatig pretty bad now and the service engine light comes on when it goes down to empty.

Or just do the pump now since you'll be in there.
