Default Well my original 10 yr. old battery finally died!

Yep, my original AC Delco battery lasted almost exactly 10 years! Not bad. I always keep it on the battery tender, and just this week I noticed that it kept charging it for a couple of days when normally the light is always green (full charge.) Sure enough I tried to take it to a cruise-in last night and click. Also, the cheap Wal-Mart Everstart battery in my Chevelle is over 6 years old, and batteries in all 4 of our other cars are at least 5 years old. I highly recommend a Battery Tender and I'll skip the outrageously expensive Optima batteries.

Battery longevity has to do with chemistry. If you have fewer charge/discharge cycles, the chemicals will stay in better shape and the battery last longer.

Lead acid batteries are also a comodity and (for a traditional design) don't really vary from one brand to another. What matters is the warranty, which should give you a better gauge to the purity of the chemicals/metals inside.

This is probably a low mileage car, right? A battery tender is a good thing if you aren't driving a car very much, but it won't give "life" to a battery.

I've had mine for 10 years too. It's stored in my basement when the car gets put away and I've got low mileage on it.

I had to replace mine when it was about 3 years old due to leaking. I replaced it with another Delco and it didn't make it a year before it started leaking too.

Don't they have at least a 5 or 6 year warranty?

Yea. The originals on the car were good then they had some problems with replacements.

My original lasted a long time and I replaced it with a sealed battery that leaked. That leaking battery was replaced under the pro-rated warranty with a new delco that is unsealed. Its been going strong for several years now.

You can weld a bunch of these together or search other threads on battery replacement.

Let's not jack up this thread and keep it on the topic of longevity.

i had one of those duralast batteries in my beater and that thing didnt even make it a whole year before quitting, tried to charge it and still nothing. OEM batteries somehow ive never had issues with until after they finally crapped out on me after years of good service

I always get between 5-7 years out of my Delco batteries. They have two different grades for most applications, in terms of warranty. I always buy the better one.

I wouldn't feel comfortable going more than 7 years though. It's a hassle to get stranded due to a bad battery (this has happened to me before), and it's hard on alternators to recharge old batteries that are usually low on voltage at every cold start and eventually begin to resist the charge.

I had a brand new Duralast with a bad cell right out of the store. The warranty is what I pay for though.
