Default Rebuilding steering column

So on the drive down to the Woodward dream cruise the car got very hot waiting to cross the border and inching over the Sarnia bridge. Noticed that the steering was not right had slack in the steering, so after replacing the steering rack and still having the problem it seems that the plastic collar in the steering column has melted. Could see a piece of it hanging out of the collar.
Anyone ever hear of this happening. I have Kooks stainless headers that have been coated.
Anyone ever heard of this

cant say that I have,,, That collar is just a cover,, the column joints are metal Just because the collar melted, it should not have made your steering sloppy.

Maybe its a ball joint or a bad hub? Like RARON455 pointed out, you have metal inside the column that connects directly to the steering wheel.
