Default How to remove battery acid off of plastic?

So long story short, my battery sprayed acid all over my engine bay... anyone know hot to remove battery acid off of plastic, engine block, fuel rails, A/C dryer? I tried coke but that did nothing... my next venture is baking soda which I will try tomorrow.

Thanks

baking soda i thinkk will be your best bet in soaking/breaking the acid up, then just hose the engine down where you put the baking soda.

+1 on the baking soda. Coke is an acid, so that won't do anything for you.

After you neutralize the acid with baking soda and wash it off, you may be able to use rubbing alcohol to clean up any spotting on plastic. If that doesn't work, there are more drastic things that can be done - but are high maintenance.

well the baking soda didnt do ****... I used about a 25% baking soda/75% water mixture. Tried to scrub it some with a sponge, still nothing. This happened a few days ago, maybe i waited too long.

The wire looming and fuel rails is what is really bothering me, the radiator shroud I can remove and paint. The AC dryer I would think would be the easiest to fix but I cant get anything off of it. My next guess is to wet sand it down.

um i dont think you mix them, then apply, just sprinkle the baking soda on by itself, let soak, then spray off with a hose...

At work we always use a baking soda/water mix to create a paste and use it like that.

To clean up the aluminium parts go to a truck stop and buy a gallon of stainless steel/aluminium cleaner. Be carefull with it! Makes the metal look like new. For the plastic try liquid plastic cleaner. There are different grits. It might work it might not. worth a try. The acid etched. Good luck

Did you try rubbing alcohol on the plastic? It should take off the outer layer and leave things looking like new. (If the acid didn't burn too deep.)

I'll bet the wire loom is a lost cause. Easier to just replace it. Polishing the alumnimum as 38DD points out should take care of that - although using a thick baking soda paste and a scotch-brite pad has done the trick for me in the past.

Thanks for all of the input guys. I ended up taking a bunch of pieces off, sanding them down, and spraying them as well as some of the wire looming. I sanded the AC dryer with 600 and it seemed to get it all off but left it very chalky looking, ill have to follow with some 1000, 2000, and some polish to shine it up. The fuel rails I might have to eventually pull and paint.

Now my main concern is that I noticed the fuel injector harness' have some spackle on them... not sure what I can do about those, was thinking of unplugging all the harness', laying a towel over the engine, taping off the bottom of plugs, and spraying them.
