Default What causes a fuel gauge to go bad?

As the title states, im wondering what causes a fuel gauge to go bad, as mine has seeming went out. It works from full to a 1/4 then it seems to stick, and will eventually drop to a half, from time to time the guage will flicker to where i believe it needs to be but does not stay there. Sometimes you can glance down and you will see the needle bouncing but it always ends up where i know it doesnt belong. Any input is appreciated!
Thanks,
Austin.

The small metal contacts on the fuel level sensor wear out. This creates a bad connection & causes the fuel gauge to read erratic, or stuck on E or F.

You could drop the tank & change it but thats the hard way IMO. You can cut a trap door above the tank like this:https://ls1tech.com/forums/fueling-i...where-cut.html
If you have a plastic tank use the 2nd pic.

Interesting. Wonder if ethanol affects this too like everything else?

Thats a rare case that its that. Fuel level sensors going out is very common on a GM vehicle.

Mine worked perfect down to 3/4 of a tank and then it went all to hell. It would just be sitting there working and then drop to empty and show check gauges. It was the sensor. Its got 5 or 6 little fingers that sweep across and make contact as the float goes up and down. Mine had about 2 half fingers. I changed the sensor and it works perfectly. I even had a code fuel level sensor high voltage.
