Default exhaust "clank"

in an effort to move the factory catback as much as i could on the factory hangers while getting my cutout welded in, i may have moved it a little too much and now the part of the exhaust that goes over the axle is now very very close to the heat shield. its not touching, but its close enough to produce a rattle from time to time. the simple solution would be to remove the heat shield but im somewhat afraid to do so as the gas tank is right beyond it. i would hope gm wouldn't trust a thin, flimsy piece of sheetmetal to protect the gas tank against exhaust heat, but i have been known to be wrong, on occasion.

i was considering removing it and heat wrapping that part just for protection, but is that overkill? has anyone just removed the heat shield for the same reasons?
