Default Rear Differential fluid replace.

Looking to swap the differential fluid in the Z. Is this a hard task to do myself? what tool's does this require? Like socket sizes etc. I have the stock 2002 z28 10 bolt diff. What diff fluid is recommended?

Pretty easy, I used this as a guide:
http://www.installuniversity.com/ls1...d-install.html

Just ignore the stuff relating to the T/A cover. Get a fluid pump too (cheap at your local parts store), it will make filling the diff a lot easier.

There's lots of guides/posts on here to.

GM recommended fluid is 75w90 synthetic with one small bottle of GM LSD. Some people feel that the additive is not necessary for the '99+ Torsen rears, but then some people feel that the rear is noisier without it. So you'll have to make that decision for yourself. Using it certainly can't hurt anything though.

Other than that, a cover gasket and basic had tools is all you really need. The GM gear fluid bottles used to come with caps that had a nice tapered tip, and you could clamp some rubber hose over the tip and just squeeze the fluid into the diff. But if you can't get a cap like that, then the fluid pump would certainly make matters easier.

I've never used jack stands for this, I just back the car up onto ramps. It's been a while since I did one, so I don't remember if I had to use a jack for additional clearance or not. But any rear sub-frame point that lifts the body away from the axle would be fine.

I've always used the GM/Goodwrench brand. Those were the bottles that came with the nice little tapered caps. I stocked up on this stuff a long time ago and haven't bought any in several years, so I have no idea if they come that way now.

I use the GM additive from the dealer. I think it was about $11.00. Mobil 1 gear oil and red gasket maker. As stated above just follow the install U guide youll be fine. Make sure to scrape the old gasket well or youll have a leak. Also, buy the pump. I didnt and it took a while to get all the fluid in.
