Default Noisy rear end on my '98 Z28

I recently changed a bent rear axle on my driver's side and now there is a whining sound coming from what sounds like the rear end that seems to keep getting louder. Any advice on what this might be and what caused it? And also what's the best way to fix this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

if the fluid level is good ,you mite have a bad bearing .did you inspect the ring& pinion gears when you R&R the axle ?

.My rear end sounded like a meat grinder and got louder the faster I drove. I took it to a rear end guy and my bearings were bad and my ring and pinion teeth were worn. Check your fluid first. You probably have bad bearings.

like everyone else said, pull the cover and inspect. I had a bad pinion bearing and it did the same thing that you're describing. I pulled the cover and there was a decent amount of metal on the magnet.

my mechanic told me the rear end seemed to be ok inside when he replaced the axle, but i'm thinking is should go to a transmission specialist who can check out the bearings. anything else i should ask him to check while he has it opened up? my rear end doesn't sound like a meat grinder like like transwiz was saying, but the whining gets louder the faster i drive

What your describing sounds like bearings in the rear end. My rear end guy had to pull the differential out. He said it was probably bearings going into it. You can tell though when it is your rear end.

That is the normal operational sound of a T-1 Torsen diff during power off 'coast down'.

Basically, NO gear oil/limited slip additive brand is going to get rid of that completely, although some might mask it/quiet it down more than others.

Thanks for all the help! I'm going to take it to the transmission shop this week and see what the diagnosis is and hopefully it's not that bad and won't empty my wallet too much!

If the noise is present when on the gas but not when just rolling it's most likely the pinion bearing. If it's present all the time then it's the carrier or wheel bearings.

When this happened to my old z28 I got a take out rear end out of a 94 LT1 trans am for $100 and had it installed by a local shop for $250 or $300.

The only thing they had to do was swap out the pinion yoke from the 98 axle to the 94 axle.

knowing how and why the axle got bent would help in diagnosing the problem. Axle's don't just bend on their own and you probably needed other parts to go along with that axle.

I agree with the post above.Axles don't just bend for no reason.
