Power Steering cooler leaking? Oily coolant!
Hey guys,
it appears the power steering cooler on our 2000 Transam is leaking. Power steering fluid is leaking down quickly (entire reservoir empty in less than 500 miles), and there are no "major" leaks on the outside. I checked the coolant -- feels greasy/oily -- uhoh.
So, no big deal: I replace the cooler (p/n 10417037) and the pump (it's been on it's way out), but the wife points out the steering pump fluid also looks a little milky. Now frothing on a breaking old pump seems normal, but it has some white slime too, and that could indicate water of some sort.
Could it be the coolant leaked into the steering pump circuit? If so, how do I flush it out when I go to replace the pump? Syringe with some power steering fluid? I don't want water running through my brand new pump!
Thanks!

dang -- the steering cooler is no longer carried by most part suppliers and the dealership wants $240 or something. I got a used one on eBay from these guys:

The OE unit is a terrible design. Check this thread out for a cost and performance effective alternative.

Ah nice, I should have looked a little harder first! The external cooler looks like a nice mod (and does make more sense). I've got the stock/used replacement on the way -- I'll see if I can cancel it!
Thanks!
