Default Squeaking Belts = Annoying Whine!

Updated by crank power and alternator pulleys to powerbond last year and needed to update the belts to a different part number. Just last week, I started to get a nasty squeaking noise that turns into a whine in sync with the rev's.

Any idea of the fix for noisy, squeaking belts?

Interestingly enough, the issue is not constant and only happens every other day whether in commute highway driving or street. I checked the belts and they are fine.

I had this problem for the longest time. Tried new belts and pulleys but it would still be off and on whiny. Got some Goodyear gatorback belts and haven't had a problem since.

Idler pulley and/or tensioner/tensioner pulley are likely at fault if belts are OK.

check the plastic idler pulleys for your a/c belt drive, they sometimes wear, chip, and get out of shape

Just recently went through all of this with my car. Driving the car for a week without the AC belt helped me figure out if it was a main or AC belt system issue. I ended up replacing every idler/tensioner pulley but in the end it was being caused by a weak/bad AC belt tensioner.

I have a bad chirp also. But its probably from the powermaster alternator pulley I just installed.

I had a problem a couple years ago with chirping/squealing especially when it was cold and damp. Replaced the belt...no luck. Replaced the idler/tension pulleys with cheap plastic ones that they gave me at O'Riellys but it still squealed and chirped. I took them back for better quality steel ones and the noises went away. That's what worked for me....good luck.

I keep a travel size bottle of baby powder in my car at all times. Shuts the squeal up for a week or two per application. That's my routine until I decide to quit being lazy and go pick up a gatorback. Also, if it's an idler you can repack them with grease if done carefully. There's a thread on here about that.

I am going through this hell right now. I just bought the car last week, and on the way home the water pump crapped out on me. As it was draining fluid I began to get a loud squealing noise. I replaced the pump, belt, tensioner, tensioner pulley and repacked the grease on all of the idler pulleys. Still have a loud squeal. I believe I have narrowed it down to the power steering pump. At the last minute today I opened the reservoir and the fluid was low. I do not have experience with these so I am hoping that I can just fill it back up and it go away???

replaced main idler pulley which I got from Pep Boys for $45 including tax. Still squeaking during the 1st day after replacement then all of a sudden stopped on 2nd and 3rd days?!

I'm going to stick with this fix for now and keep an eye out for any new shenanigans from the squeaking noises under the ls1 hood department...i'll post Dayco part numbers tomorrow.

My advice is to keep the accessory drive OEM. I havent seen a GOOD reason to modify it yet. Sure the pulleys wear out over time, but you get at least 100k out of it with almost no noise.
