Default SES on...off....on....off....just a minor issue??? Sensor maybe?

1997 M6......SES has been coming off and on for the last few months.... I do hear some rattling underneath the front passenger seat... It threw out codes p0140 and p0161.... If my left cat was bad the SES light wouldnt go off and on (multiple times), would it? And if it was the left cat it wouldn't throw out either of the codes mentioned previously, would it? Thanks everyone for any help given

Those codes are for a bad O2 sensor or O2 electrical problem. You'd get a different code for a CAT issue. I'd start by getting under the car and inspecting the wires. Look for loose ones or melted ones.

Do you have headers???

When you say it's going on and off are you meaning it's flashing when driving or it will sometimes come on for a while and next time you drive the car it's off?

If it's flashing when you are driving there is a misfire which can kill a cat with the quickness.

If it's on sometimes and others not its because after so many drive cycles(depending on what the problem is)it will clear itself.

P0161- heater circuit bank 2 sensor 2 malfunction
P0140- heater circuit bank 1 sensor 2 low activity

There are several things that can cause these codes ranging from MAF to evap solenoid.
since you are getting both sides for the after cats O2's I would start with checking the fuses. After that I would go with what wssix99 said.
