Default 00 camaro T-top question.

Question everyone... I just bought a driver side t-top for my camaro, it however did not come with the key to lock it. Luckily it was unlocked already so I was able to install it. My concern is.. Am I ok to drive back and forth on the freeway and all just by having the Handel locked in but without actually locking it using the key???

Ok good,, I'm just a bit paranoid. My previous one flew out on the freeway that's why.. That was all my fault tho.. I just can't remember if I forgot to lock it in by pulling the Handel or if I did being it down just forgot to lock it with the key..

I suggest you check the fit, may like to adjust the lock to take out any slack, the slack not the lock or unlock is the cause of losing a top

YES YES YES. It's not about you - its about your passengers or if you let someone else drive your car.

People have gotten really used to o-**** handles and our cars don't have them. If someone else grabs that handle thinking its the o-**** handle they are after, then the top will fly off if you are traveling at speed. Locking the top also locks that handle.

So, you are fine for now. But I'd recommend taking the cylinder out and to a locksmith to be re-keyed to your existing key.

I remember the conversation well. I was in the dealership placing the order for my car in 1999. (It would arrive 9 months later, but that's a different story.) Man had just discovered fire, found out that the world was round, and I was getting a new car.

The dealer warned me very specifically when I chose the t-top option to always keep the tops locked. She had a customer get one and they returned the same day after a passenger pulled the handle as the car was accelerating down a highway. T-top destroyed.

That's very unfortunate. I've been lucky I guess, all of my passengers have gripped the handle area on the door panels(not the actual opening handle). But I know T-Tops are expensive so I think I'll start locking them! Because now that I've read this I'm sure I'm somehow jinxed lol!

I've never locked mine, and if I get a new person in the car I tell them to not touch it unless they want to replace it. Its not often I have anyone in the tho.

for sure lol. I one almost lost one when I was riding with my nephew and a little rain started coming down, I grabbed a Ttop and he grabbed one and he didn't close out his handle when we were busy yapping. When I turned out of the parking lot it slid out about halfway and scared the B-Jesus out of me.
