Default Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacment

Hi Guys,

I have a 2001 Firehawk, so I already have the LS style intermediate steering shaft, but there is far to much movement in the u-joints which is giving me sloppy steering.

I would rather not replace it with a used part, with the possibility of just getting the same problem.

Has anyone found a NEW supply for these, or a manufacture of replacement kit specifically for the Camaro/Firebird LS1 setup.

thanks

same issue here, my upper u-joint is shot, but i've got the v6/lt1 shaft with the rag joint (which is not the problem, i've checked).

I've asked in the past if there was anyway to replace the u-joints but never got a response.

If you could get the spec on the joint I don't see why you couldn't look up the replacement in a parts catalog. Not all shafts are clocked the same either I found out the hard way when I went to replace my entire shaft. As a welder, I cut it and reclocked to to match the stock unit but I realize not everyone has that capability.

You may find this guide useful. http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/w...ck_Rebuild.pdf

Most of the parts in the column have not changed in 40+ years, so the parts should be plentiful. You might call up a company that does column rebuilds and see if they can get you the new part.

just to be clear, the OP is referring to the u-joints circled in red in the attached pic. This is the part that connects the rack to the steering column.

I melted the rubber bushing on mine. I ended up having one made. There is a shop that specializes in steering column and he had it done. It was stupid expensive. I also picked up one second hand just to have a spare.

I did some searching and found that the stock u-joint are much longer than the standard 3-1/4" ones borgesun makes or can be found on jegs. The good news is that I'm pretty confident one can be made. The column and rack are just D shafts, jegs sells these in the standard 3/4" size. The shaft in 18" increments is 20 bucks and the u joints go for 60 or so. In the end I'll still be over 160 for a new shaft....****

Ya I've seen those, but theres no promise they'll be any better than what I have. Even if they are they may take a crap in a few months anyway.

Not sure I found a part number and did a search and seems no one has them lol I suppose a dealer may be able to do a nation wide search though

I think your best bet is to buy a cheap used shaft then pull it apart, measure everything and find the proper parts. You can still drive your car and I'm sure someplace out there you can find joints that size.

Default 1994 Camaro z28 ls swap

I'm not sure if my shaft install procedure are correct but I'm having issues getting it . Should I connect the steering wheel end first or the bottom first? I do have a LS RACK AND PINION.

Bumping this thread, swapped out my LT1 shaft for a used LS style and have some play in the joints.

I guess there are no resources for replacing the u-joints?

Sure there are. The stock ones can be rebuilt or aftermarket companies like Flaming River have parts for new/fancy ones.

This is exactly the information myself and multiple other gentlemen have been looking for, any sources for that info? Thanks
