Default power steering pump issue. need help. smoking pump

So I changed my rack and pinion on my 00 z28. As I bolt, screw and plug everything up. I fill up the reservoir up with power steering fluid and so called bleed the system. I turn on the car and notice my pump begins to whine super loud and after about a min or two of having the car on I begin to see smoke coming from behind the power steering pulley. . Haa anyone ever have this issue before? I am now scared to torn my car on and am so not wanting to call a mechanic and have him charge a pretty penny to fix something that I could've done myself.

How's the fluid level? Sounds like it went dry or seized. The smoke sounds like it coming from either the seal or the pulley - if its the pulley, you may have ruined it and the shaft of the shaft. I'd remove the belt and try and turn the pump pulley by hand to see what's going on.
