Default Does removing the plastic air dam in front of the radiator effect cooling?

I recently put a tubular front bumper support on my car and was curious if removing the plastic air dam in front of the radiator would have any effect on coolant temps. I assume since all that foam that was blocking the holes in the bumper is now gone, that more air would be able to get to the radiator/trans cooler along with whatever air comes from under the car. Has anyone removed that front air dam and if so did you notice any change in temperature?

In stock form, this air dam is necessary because these cars don't have a functional grille. If you have an open grille now that is able to flow air to the radiator, then in theory you should be able to remove the air dam without much concern.

I would think that removing it would let more air under the car and would unfavorably impact handling at speed.

I don't exactly see why you would want to remove it. It's not like it can really see it and makes to car look terrible. It's there for a reason and I would leave it at that.

So because it's not visible is your reason i should leave it? Im not comcerned with how it looks.

My question was that since I no longer have that bulky front support would the holes in the bumper become functional and increase air flow to the radiator. That air dam blocks the air path through the holes to the radiator.

How does the air damn block the radiator, the air dam is behind where the radiator air flow is located therefore forcing air up into the area infront and above of the air damn where the radiator air flows I still don't exactly see your reasoning for removing it.

I'm not talking about the one under the car, I'm not doing anything with that one. The one I'm referring to is the one behind the hood latch under the lid.

So your talking about the little plastic shroud that's directly underneath the air lid box? I'm still not exactly sure what your talking about. Pic?

IF one converts to a 'front breather' vs. a 'bottom breather', and eliminates that plastic spoiler under the car without adding a full NASCAR style air dam to the bottom of the bumper, or a substantial splitter under there, then YES, the high speed stability/handling would be very negatively effected by lift.

I never saw any difference in cooling and that's reading off the PCM.

When the shop installed my new iron block 390ci they left that black plastic piece you're talking about off......I had slight heating issues. As soon as I installed it temps were all normal again. I do have a tranny fluid cooler in front of my condensor that made it hard for them to fit it back in....but I made it fit back in.

Its part of the cooling system and the air coming up from that lower air dam is directed back into the condensor because of that black plastic piece. Without it....a lot of ram air will get lost by coming up into the engine compartment.

Did your car have that stock foam bumper support out when you noticed it?
