Default Off-throttle squealing

I have been getting a strange squealing when I let of the throttle. It sounds almost exactly like a brake pad indicator squeal but happens without applying the brakes. It only happens right after I let off the throttle and the sound "pulses" instead of being constant. Any ideas?

Time to check the wheel bearings. How many miles are on yours?

The drivers side is original and has 79k on it. My passenger side had play in it and was replaced with one off a 99 Trans Am with unknown mileage (no play though).

It's about that time... 70k-80k seems to often be a magic number for the stock hubs.

Really?

I've got 283,000 miles on mine.

... and you are the original owner? You don't still have orange shocks on the car, do you?

What would make them only make noise off throttle?

Worn bearings taking the extra weight loading on the front wheels when you let off the throttle.

It might be interesting to see what they do going around a corner, etc. when throttle is released.

The classic wheel bearing diagnosis is that it is worst on the outer wheel when making a turn or changing lanes. Slalom the car a bit with the windows down at 40-ish mph. When you veer right, you should hear the left wheel, etc.

I had a squeaky pulse noise off the front wheel that turned out to be loose center caps. Check for that also

LOL! No .. I bought the car at 54k so I'm sure that those hubs are original in there. And no - I swapped my decrapons around 200k.

Difference in driving most likely ... I am on the highway 80% of the miles on it.

Maybe not. Others have had them go before then. Particularly if the car has some years on it, in addition to miles.

This does probably help a lot.

Well, the noise doesn't seem to change based on which way the car is turning. With the windows up it actually sounds like its coming from the rear of the car...

If turning or changing lanes makes no difference, your bearings are OK. If you've already checked your center caps, sounds like the rear brake indicator might be all it is.

If the throttle makes a difference, it could be as simple as the exhaust noise covering it up.

One other thought is that e-brake horseshoe inside the rear rotors might need replacing.
