Default Air pump

Is the air pump on a 2000 Trans Am ls1 on all the time when the car is running or does it shut off after few minutes of run time?

Shuts off after a few minutes when the cats heat up. Runs longest on a cold start I believe. But always shuts off after a few.

Yes, and sometimes even a brand new, perfectly functioning pump will make a god awful squeal/shreik, almost like a REALLY BAD seperntine pulley bearing, which will go away when the engine is revved above idle, and then return when back to idle, until the pump shuts off.

If you can live with the SES light you can pull the fuse and no more squealing

Whats the AirPump used for and what are the consequences of deleting it and tuning it out?

also can you pass emissions in TX or CA with it gone? will they really look for it?

To heat the cats more quickly when the engine is first started.

Higher tail pipe emissions when the engine/exhaust are still cold.

No idea. In my state it's not a problem to delete it as long as the tuning is done properly to keep the SES off.

In ca you will not pass visual inspection. Yes ,they check for the cats, air pump and Egr. I have my egr blocked off and I'm gonna have to put it back on and have it tuned out for my smog in December. 99 and earlier have to do the tailpipe sniffer still. 2000 and newer you have to have all monitors set to ready and no pending or current codes and its plug in the obd and go.99 and earlier can still have one system not ready I think.I would take my air pump off if it wouldn't be such a problem every 2 years.

pull the fuse and tune out the code. Then, two weeks early, reinstall the fuse and re activate the code.

Does anyone know if the air pump system also functions with (and helps 'save' vs. having it totally deleted/tuned out) the metal matrix, high flow aftermarket catcons used with long tubes (given that the headers have the albeit fragile, A.I.R. system 'stove pipes'), or would it NOT help those to 'light off' (or live longer) at all??
