Default alternator question

My ws6 was reading in the orange while driving on the voltage gauge when I first bought it. I Bought a new alternator for no reason..later finding out it was just a red wire coming from the harness that conected to the pigtail on the alternator. It drove perfect 14volts since then.

Now its jumping from 10ish to 11. I redid the connection I did before just to be safe and still reading about 11 on gauge. Barely starting. Any ideas? I don't want to get stranded anywhere :/

I would start with taking to an autoparts store and having them bring out the tester they have, when I bought my Trailblazer the voltage was down real low like that and it turned out to be a BAD (like literally smoking, with a horrible odor) battery, replaced the battery and all was well, when my alternator in my firebird went out the "check gauges" light came on on the dash.

Yep, need to be tested to be sure so you're not just throwing parts at the car.
