Default mystery squeak

hey guys,

recently my 2002 ss has started making a squeak specifically under acceleration under about 15%-20% throttle input. the squeak sounds like its coming from the the throttle linkage on the firewall in the car, however, I've sprayed everything with wd - 40 and the squeak comes back after about 5 minutes.
any suggestions?

thanks!

This was the worst thing you could have done. This is a penetrating oil and acts to dissolve the grease you need to keep squeeks from happening. WD-40 acts to make this type of thing worse. If you sprayed it in other places, you could be creating more problems... (The only thing this stuff should be used for on a car is cleaning bugs off the windshield and loosening rusted bolts.)

What is "everything"? Does the pitch of the squeak change with the speed of the car? The RPM of the engine? Can you make it happen when the car isn't moving? Are you saying the noise only happens when the accelerator pedal moves?

Everything means the hinge on the pedal, the hinge bolted to the firewall and the throttle cable that is visible inside the car when u fully depress the pedal. The noise doesn't change pitch at all and is not related to rpm

The noise only happens when I move the accelerator when the car is moving and not when it is stationary

And the pitch/sound of the noise changes as your foot moves with the pedal and not with the rotations of the engine or the car's wheels?

Yup. Once about 25% of the throttle is in the squeak stops

Stop by any parts or home improvement store, and pick up some lithium grease in a spray can. Almost guarantee that will take care of your squeaks.

#1 This is the proper thing for those areas vs. WD-40 or any other oil.

Weird that it would only happen when the car is moving...

ya i know. I'm thinking its because the throttle cable is under tension only when the car is accelerating... but thats just a theory

You can also unhook both ends of the throttle cable, spray some of the lithium grease inside the tubing from under the hood, and work the cable back and forth.

If you feel and major dragging, or 'snapping', it could be a sign that the cable is starting to fray inside.

Maybe your foot is in a slightly different position and putting a differet torque on the pedal???

I'd avoid this cable if at all possible. It isn't intended to be self-serviced. (A motorcycle cable specialist is probably the best place to get it rebuilt and properly lubed.) I got some water in a clutch cable once and it was pure hell when it froze.

I put some lithium grease on the cable and moved the throttle back and forth to work it in and it seemed to help. Probably another few rounds of grease will solve it
