Default changed to lighter oil, now have small leak

Has anyone had the problem of an oil leak after changing to a lighter oil ie.GC 0w30. I have always used 5w30 or 10w30 dino oil until about a month ago and never had a single leak. Now all of a sudden using the GC 0w30 Ive developed a small leak somewhere on the back of the motor(not sure exactly where from). Its not a huge leak, maybe a quarter of a quart every 400 miles. But its making qiute a mess underneath ,just wondering if anyone else has had this problem? THANX.

is your oil filter and oil pan plug in good?? if so you might have a bad oil pan gasket and thicker oil made it harder for it to get out and now with the lighter oil it can slip through the small cracks in the gasket.

Yah it looks like a little seeping from the back of the pan but the majority of the leak is coming from up higher somewhere.Thats why Im kinda leaning towards the lighter oil being the problem. Just wondering if anyone has had the same problem. My car has very high mileage also.

The fact that your car is high milage is most likely the reason its starting to leak. Engine seals and gaskets wear out after all that time and mileage, and by putting a lighter weight oil in it, its easier for it to seep through the cracks. Switch to a "high mileage" oil if you can, they have some additives to help condition the seals and they are ususally thicker as well to help prevent oil leaks.

GC 0w30 is not a lighter oil though. Despite it's 0 rating, it's actually thicker than Mobil 1 at both 100c and at 40c. The only reason it gets the 0 rating is because in very extreme cold conditions it will flow faster than a 5w30 would.

But it's not a thin oil by any means. For all intents and purposes it behaves very much like a 10w40, with the exception of the fact that it won't thin out.

Ok so you think using the GC0w30 is or is not the reason for the leaks? Should I switch back to dino 5w30 and 10w30 or stick with the GC?

Could be that the sythnetic oil cleaned out the gunk the reg. dino oil left behind,or just coinsident.

i would almost be willing to bet its the fact that you switched from dino oil to a full synthetic oil at a higher milage.
