mine was like that, the metal bracket had snapped and i had to buy a new mirror to replace it. if the top part is pulling away from the body, then sounds like the same thing has happened to you.

I had a wiggly mirror on the driver side. I was poking around at it and it fell out in my hand! The glue had let go.

I glued it back on without searching deeper. I figured the wiggling was caused by the glue letting go. But it still wiggles. Looks like the problem is in the mechanism somewhere, and I don't feel like fooling with a new mirror to see if I can fix it.

freaking like 160 bucks bc they dont sell the bracket by itself...and its primer grey so i just swapped out the old housing so i didnt have to pay for paint also....id suggest trying to go to a junkyard, dont worry about the color bc you can just use your stock one if the bracket is the thing that is broken. just unscrew the plastic panel on the inside of the door to remove the bolt and check.

I was thinking more along the lines of breaking out the old mirror and then fooling with the mechanism to see if I could get out the slop. Then I'd replace the mirror itself. That sounds pretty cheap.
