Cool 98 M6 SS, Noisy antibackfire valves on startup...?

I have a 98 Camaro, with a LS1 engine. On start up I hear a growling noise. I can hear the air pump running, seemingly quiet. The noise is coming from the anti backfire valves. Could they be possibly burnt out? The car has 90,000 miles, runs great. The noise last for a few moments then lessens and disappears, probably through the cycle of the air pump. Is there a way to remove this set up, it seems rather useless. Thanks for the help!
