Default inline pump through dead fuel pump?

I've been noticing lately that after a long drive (on highways usually) i get a high pitched humming/whining from the rear. im guess this is the fuel pump? It's happened with more that half the tank full..

What I'm wondering is, if I get an inline pump can I hook that up and just unplug the stock pump and have the inline pump suck through the stock one? I'm trying to avoid dropping the tank to replace the stock one lol.

Any input guys? thanks

p.s. What pumps would you reccomend?

I dont think that would work good, Because the secondary pump would have to pull fuel through the stock pump, I dont think that would give good feed flow, and probably not have good fuel pressure. Just my .02

Since it would have to pull through the non-moving, locked-up motor I would say you are going to lose some flow. Possibily enough to render it useless.

I know dropping the tank isn't what you want to hear but it is going to be the most likely solution. my 2 cents.

Couldn't hurt to try but I would never do it in a car you plan on hot-rodding.

I can't remember what the lines looked like but is there a way to run it through the return and use a vacumn fed pump signal or something?

Some fuel systems only have 1 line and the return shouldn't be clogged by the pump. Anyone know if the return line dips deep enough into the tank?
