Default TCS stuck 'off'

The dash light is always lit saying its off no matter what I do with the button. The light on the button lights up for a second when I turn the car on and if you remove the shift boot all the wires are there and connected. What else should I look at?

Or am I better off with it not working?

Either an ABS fault (though you would expect to see
some other lights, there) or an electrical fault with the
throttle relaxer servo; there is a self-check that runs
at startup, if there is a bad connection, motor open
circuit etc. it will give up.
